Tips For Cleaning Honeycomb Or Cellular Blinds

These days, more homeowners are opting for honeycomb or cellular blinds than ever before – this style is not only quite attractive (and will add to the aesthetics of the home), it also provides adequate ultraviolet protection and boosts the insulation of the space. They are comprised of small, hexagonal cells that are filled with air. Because of this, the blinds often appear quite delicate and many homeowners are unsure how they should go about cleaning them.

The good news is that cleaning cellular blinds is actually quite simple, once you know what you’re doing. It should not be any more difficult than cleaning the other window furnishings in your home. Below, we have outlined the three main types of ‘clean’ that most homeowners would like to complete:

Spot Cleaning
When the blinds themselves aren’t really dirty but you have noticed a few mold spots or even a stain, spot cleaning is the way to go. For mold, purchase a chlorine solution from your local supermarket or mix together one part water and one part bleach. Keep in mind that mold can return, so you will need to spray and wipe with the solution regularly to prevent it from reoccurring. In terms of other stains, a typical cleaning product should be sufficient; just treat the area gently so as not to deform the fabric.

Everyday Cleaning

For an everyday clean (when the in-laws are coming over, for example), all you will really need to do is give the cellular blinds a good dust. This can be achieved with a feather duster, but we recommend a static duster to ensure that all particles are removed. If you already have your vacuum out, however, you can use it to suck up all the dust from the surface. This is also quite efficient at getting insects away from the blinds. Some homeowners like to use compressed air to remove dust, but this only displaces the dirt (not removes it).

Deep Cleaning

For a more thorough clean that will not only remove dust but will also get rid of the musty smell that our window coverings seem to naturally produce with time, this is the method for you. Take the blinds down and soak them in a solution of water and mild detergent (the bathtub is a great place to do this). Swirl the water around the fabric, but be careful to keep the head rail or valance dry. Rinse in clean water to finish. You can remove excess water by raising the shade and tipping it to one side. Then, simply hang and allow to air dry.

Now that you are fully aware of how to properly clean your honeycomb or cellular blinds, what are you waiting for? An everyday clean shouldn’t take you any longer than a few minutes and, whilst spot or deep cleaning will take a little longer, they are the perfect weekend project. Whenever you use a new cleaning product on your blinds, however, we recommend testing it in an inconspicuous area to ensure that it won’t affect the colour.
